The bench was sold at Mothers' Day 8th of May, refunds were a total 1000 euro were in favour of Voedselbank Rotterdam.

Four days after the launch 28 out of 30 copies are still available at www.allianzkunst.nl for E 250,-.

In the jury's comment they called the etch 'intriguing' and 'mysterious and at the same time amenable' and also said 'like if the spectator witnesses moment in transformation between human and mythical fairy tale creature'.
I found the comment very nice, though the remark 'the absence of shadow emphasises the intriguing effect'is a bit strange. Feeble, but present there is shadow at the right side of the face.

Actually I am not very pleased with how my work is described in the catalogue. They mixed up the words 'beauty' with 'being beautiful' because (I think) they didn't want to use the same noun twice, which makes the statement really superficial and misses all the elements regarding innocence and the hardships of growing up. It's a pity, because there is so much to tell about this subject!

Online they made a little mistake about the measurements. The paper is a bit bigger then the actual etch.

The lovely ponds

At the expo Cadaver Exquise at KunstpodiumT, Kim Reinders, a classmate of WdKA, had this poetic idea for us to cooperate. She would make little ponds out of mirrors, plants and white soil. She would create a sort of pool/pond for my fictional characters to reflect the drawings. I istantly loved the idea. It made me think of Hylas and the Nymphs(1896) by Waterhouse and also the song and the clip Were the wild roses grow by Nick Cave and the 'Bad Seedes' and Kylie Minogue. I love the romantic cruelty in both.

Green version Bunny Blonde

My teacher, Kiki Lamers gave me advice to remake 'The Bunny Blonde' with more paint. I found the image without ears strong and interesting enough, though classic, to leave them out.

I used a picture from Harpers Bazaar, the woman is actress Ashley Greene.

I used an old webcam-picture of myself. I like the angle and the distortion. The freckles are blue, same as the eyes and the gloss on the lips.

Here a work I'm still struggling with. The work is about the image of women as seductive objects, used in advertisment and also in more heavy subjects like arraigned marriage.

Ik wanted to make worms and other fishing-bait morph out of her head, but everytime I try she transforms in Medusa... But I still like the back and the shoulders.

The Bunny Blonde

With "The Bunny Blonde" I refer to the women who like to depict theirselves as 'Playboy-bunnies'. The bunny-ears make te person look like the sweet, cute, small, soft and innocent creatures but also remind us to the sexual behaviour of bunnies, which is a double message. Most of times these ears try to make a shallow image of women or for that matter, beauty. In this work I just want to depict the innocent beauty of it.

The picture I used as a basis for the human head was a perfume-advertisment showing a girl with this old-fashioned hairdo, very light hair and an alarming long neck. I was struck by the way the braids crossed her head and found her gaze intruiging.

The work is again on hardwood with white and pink acrylics and pencil.

Selfportrait as Red Riding Hood

A few days ago I decide to smash my piggy bank and invest in a great tool for artist: a beamer! Excited to go to work I picked a picture of myself years ago and beam and portray it like Red Riding Hood. I loved to work this way. Actually I lent some ways of working of lessons in etching. First I made a red surface, painted white over it, and while it was still wet I scratched out the outlines, I am still in doubt if it is maybe too subtle...

This drawing is about growing pains and all the symbolics involved about cutting off a girls' long hair. Most of times the cutting of hair is combined with assumptions about getting older and getting rid of childish things as long hair, braids or ponytails and parents talking about the regrowth and how much mature the girl is looking. And ofcourse there is symbolic intwined with the historical context about cutting off of hair: Jeanne d'Arc is the heroic example while the shaving of heads in World War II had a sinister, humiliating function.

The drawing is made on multiplex, with acrylics and HB, H and B2 pencils. Size: 1,40x 79

Heart-shaped glasses

I got my inspiration from the sunglasses-trend with heart-shapes. I had these glasses as a child and I see them everywhere now. It hints to Nabokovs 'Lolita', the bookcover showed in the late '70 and '80 a girl with a lollipop wearing these glasses. A lot of times it resembles innocence or faked innocence.

It is gesso with pencil on hardwood, but a lot bigger then my previous work on wood. It isn't finished yet.

I got my inspiration from a lot of things this time. Most of the time I was thinking of having very hairy skin, because it was so cold outside. And ofcourse hair in some places is not 'appropriate' and give the idea of being wild and uncivilised.

Yesterday, I spent the whole day drawing a girl with a big ponytail. The work is made with very fine lines of pencil. I left the atelier at five, came back today and find the work trashed by a lunatic who thougt it was nice to put big fat black EOE-sign next to it! I really don't understand people who walk into an artacademy and start trashing around....But here you still can see the undamaged drawing....

This installation will be in the group-expo '1984' in 'de Kunstsuper' from july 25th.

Het behandelt het verbod op bepaalde 'luxe' levensmiddelen in dictatoriale politiek als symbool en allegorie voor een beperking van de vrijheid van het individu. Op de tafel staan echte suiker, chocolade, koffiebonen en echte boter. Bij wijze van anti-dictatoriaal dieet kan de bezoeker nog even toetasten..
